Hello,World

Delta Xi Nu Multicultural Sorority Inc. is busy making last-minute preparations for its 3rd Annual signature event, Destination Diversity. The theme this year is “Hello World!”

Its purpose is to reach out to Bearkats and the local Hunstville community to help them learn about different cultures.

Destination Diversity, “Hello World!” is co-sponsored by the Office of Multicultural and International Student Services (M.I.S.S.), and will feature cultural performances, food, children’s activities, dancing, t-shirts, information about other countries and arts and crafts exhibits, all free to the public.

“Delta Xi Nu strives to promote diversity and cultural awareness and what better way to stay true to our belief than to educate the local community through a festival, on the different cultures of the world,” said Delta Xi Nu Signature Event Chair and senior education major, Sarah Hollins. “It’s a fun, cultural experience for the whole community.”

Entertainment this year will include DJ Alonzo “Zo” Stagg as well as performances by various artists and dancers, including a main performance of Bali dancing between 3 and 3:30 p.m. by Indian dancers from College Station, Aparupa Chatterjee and group. “We dance for charity,” said Chatterjee, dance instructor and student at Texas A & M University.

Although Delta Xi Nu is one of many Greek organizations at SHSU, it has a unique mission to spread cultural diversity through unity. The mission of the organization is vital because each member has her own unique culture and traditions to share.

“Huntsville is becoming a more diverse place, and we need to understand and respect the many different cultures in the area,” said Hollins.

As the festival reaches out mainly to children, the students and faculty of Sam Houston State University are also invited to come and partake in the event.

“The sorority has worked diligently to put together Destination Diversity, and we are excited to watch a variety of people become more aware of their cultural surroundings.”

This year’s Destination Diversity will be put on with the help of volunteers from various organizations on campus including Millennium M.O.D.E.L.S., Men of Vision, Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity, and Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc.

This year’s Destination Diversity “Hello World!” will be held this Saturday, Oct. 11 from 12 to 4 p.m. at the Sam Houston Memorial gazebo on 19th Street.
