SHSU gears up for conference play

The real season starts on Saturday with the first game of SLC conference play. Nothing up to this point in the season really matters. It was nice to see the Bearkats get off to a quick start, but conference is where it really matters.

In the Kats seven wins in the conference opener they have gone on to win the conference. We start with 4-1 Central Arkansas at Conway, Arkansas.

It will be the showdown of two powerful offenses. Both rank in the top three in total offense, passing offense, and scoring. Rhett Bomar looks to feed off his SLC Player of the Week performance against Gardner-Webb.

Bomar will be going against another good quarterback in Nathan Brown, who has also earned SLC Player of the Week honors this season. They rank one and two in total offense. Bomar is averaging 314.3 yards a game. Brown is averaging 302.8 yards a game and has thrown 14 touchdowns with no interceptions.

Justin Wells and Catron Houston are looking to stay Bomar’s top targets. Each has scored two touchdowns this season. Jason Matkins leads the Bearkat receiving core with three touchdowns.

The game can be seen on the Southland Conference TV network. It marks the first of three that will be on TV this season. It can also be heard on KSAM radio on 101.7 FM.
