Women, United on Campus

Women are taking over Academic Building 4. Sam Houston State University will hold the First Annual Women Conference this Saturday called “Women in America” and is organized by Women United.

“The purpose of the conference is to educate, encourage, and unite women on campus through learning and interactive sessions,” said the president of Women United, Cheri Green.

More than 100 people have registered to attend the conference. Registration ended last week and no walk-ins will be allowed. Those who have already registered can check-in between 8:30 and 9:00 a.m. at AB4 and the conference will be from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Green said the organization’s purpose is to, “educate ,encourage, and motivate the female student body through sociological and political exploration.”

The conference is divided into four different sessions: Women’s Health presented by Sigma Gamma Rho, Careers and Professionalism with Career Services, Relationships hosted by Women United, and an Entrepreneurship session which will include a presentation from a representative from Mary Kay.

Women United was started in 2002 and has some 40 members. Earlier this year they held a breast cancer awareness program and a program called “Yes We Can” which highlighted important women in history.

“We will be trying to make this an annual event,” Green said. If any on-campus organizations would like to participate in next year’s conference, they should contact Cheri Green at women_united.shsu@yahoo.com.
