SHSU Theatre and Dance to open “Chicago”

The Sam Houston State University Department of Theatre and Dance will be presenting Chicago by John Kander and Fred Ebb on November 19-22 at 8 p.m. with a Saturday matinee on November 22 at 2 p.m. in the University Theatre Center’s Mainstage Theatre.

The production is directed and choreographed by SHSU dance faculty member Jonathan Charles with musical direction of SHSU faculty member Dr. Laura Avery. Chicago is a fast-paced musical that is sure to be a crowd pleaser with all of the talent on display. It highlights the corruption of the legal system and the historically flashy Chicago entertainment scene.

This is a vaudeville styled musical that is based on a true story of murderesses Velma Kelly (Destinee Rea McGinnis) and Roxie Hart (Madison Turner) attempting to save themselves from their seemingly inevitable executions. Chicago is a smash Broadway hit holds the record for the longest running Broadway revival with over 4,588 performances as of December 2007. The original production of Chicago featured the revolutionary dance choreography of Bob Fosse and has been unparalleled in its perpetual success since the opening. The musical also includes many popular show tunes, including “All That Jazz,” “Cell Block Tango,” “Mr. Cellophane,” and “Razzle Dazzle.”

Many talented technical and musical theatre majors are involved in the production, which contains adult language and adult content. The ticketes aare $10 for general admission and $8 for SHSU students and senior citizens with group rates always available. Children under the age of three will not be admitted.
