Calling all interested representatives

For the first time, Sam Houston State University students can apply to be a student representative for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, in which they will serve a one-year term beginning June 1, 2009, and ending May 31, 2010.

In order to qualify for this position, the student must be enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at SHSU, maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher and have a strong desire to improve higher education in Texas. Applications must be completed and returned to the Office of the Vice President for Student Services by Dec. 5.

The student representatives will have the same rights as any other board member, except the right to vote, and must attend all advisory committee meetings which will be held in Austin, Texas. There are five advisory committees and each has one position available.

The Apply Texas Advisory Committee deals with the admissions application form for people seeking admission as a freshman or undergraduate transfer student to a Texas institution of higher education. The applicant for the committee must be a freshman, sophomore or junior.

The Distance Education Advisory Committee reviews all proposed doctoral programs that are offered at a distance and engages in policy research and discussion regarding distance education. The applicant must be a freshman, sophomore, junior or graduate student.

The Financial Aid Advisory Committee works with the Coordinating Board to propose changes to state financial aid program rules and policies as needed and develop information provided by the Center for Financial Aid Information. The applicant must be a freshman, sophomore or junior.

The Graduate Education Advisory Committee provides recommendations to the Coordinating Board regarding graduate education in Texas. Anyone applying must be a graduate student.

The Undergraduate Education Advisory Committee provides recommendations to the Coordinating Board regarding graduate education in Texas. The applicant must be a freshman, sophomore or junior.
