Our Theatre Department has created two beneficial programs for students to gain hands on experience, an apprenticeship program with the Theatre Under Stars and an internship with Stages theatre in Houston.
According to Penelope Hasekoester, Dept. Chair, “This is a great opportunity for students to network, meet new people, and see in depth how the theatre business actually works.”
The Theatre Under Stars apprenticeship last for a semester and only two students are chosen. From there they will work in the office, teach and work with students, and cast musical theatre students.
The internship with Stages varies, depending on the needs of the theatre company. The collaboration with our theatre department and two of Houston’s theatres came about four years ago.
Thomas Prior, Professor at SHSU, was approached by personnel from Stages with an idea of developing a program for students to understand how much preparation goes into theatre. Students who graduate from our theatre department will definitely have the necessary skills to succeed in the future.
