While the Bearkat football team has done well in recent years and the men’s basketball team just won its first conference game, there is one thing lacking – a women’s basketball team that wins.
Let’s be real, our women’s basketball team is bad. They lose more than a contestant on The Biggest Loser. It’s not pretty, and no one likes to watch it.
While the men’s team has put up big numbers with its fast break offense, the women’s team has, well, not yet passed over the hump.
In December, the Kats played the Auburn Tigers and the Alabama Crimson Tide back-to-back. They lost to Auburn 119-54, and then lost to Alabama 90-50.
While the shooting may have contributed to those losses, the team is also averaging 20.7 turnovers a game. This can be chalked up to sloppy play.
In the past three seasons, the Bearkats have a record of 10 wins and 63 losses. That makes a dismal .15 winning percentage.
But to call out the basketball team is hard, especially any team that could endure a 2007-2008 season where they went 1-28. I’ll say this much about the girls: they are tougher than a three-dollar Wal-Mart steak.
As of press time, the team is 4-11 and 1-1 in conference. There is good Viewpoints however: they can only go in one direction – up.
To be fair, this season has had its share of high points. The team went on a two-game winning streak, beating the University of North Texas and Stephen F. Austin.
So next time you’re sitting in your dorm or apartment with nothing better to do, go cheer on your Lady Bearkats because we all need a little backing and extra motivation every now and again.
