Although officer positions have yet to be filled in Sam Houston State University’s Student Government Association, the two positions vacated by former Chief Travis Miller and Chief Jenny Zehentner were filled last Tuesday.
Ryan Bridges was nominated and voted to be Chief of External Affairs, replacing former Chief Miller. Monica Eaton was nominated and took the role of the new Chief of Student Affairs.
President Yancy presented his nominations for SGA Treasurer and Vice President, but both candidates failed to receive the necessary two-thirds vote by the Senate. The two positions have yet to be filled.
The Student Affairs Chief’s job is to act as a liason between SHSU students and SGA. As Chief of Student Affairs, Eaton said that she wants to improve the image of SGA that Bearkats have, especially due to recent problems.
“For the upcoming semester, I really want to work on updating the image of SGA and making sure people know what SGA is, and when people think of SGA, they think positively,” Eaton said. “Right now, I think a lot of them have a lot of last semester in mind.”
She also plans to continue with the work of former Chief Zehentner.
“I really want to address the agenda that Jenny already had,” Eaton said. “As far as the actual committee, really my thoughts [are] just making sure that everything remains as cordial as it can be and making sure that everybody feels they’re a part.”
Chief of External Affairs Bridges said that he will be focusing on relations with the Texas Student’s Association, including issues such as textbook prices and tuition hikes.
“I’m pretty excited about the opportunities that we’ll have this semester,” Bridges said. “We’re really going to work with TSA and the state. In the spring we’re going to get out and lobby a lot.”
