Sam Houston gave the visiting Lamar Cardinals a lesson by beating them Wednesday night, 90-77.
Leading scorers for the Bearkats were Leasa Ailshe with 22 points, and Whitney Smith with 20 points.
The Bearkats attained a comfortable 14 point lead over the Cardinals during the game. However, when the Cardinals pulled within two with 2:48 left to play in the second half, SHSU dug down.
Over the last two minutes of the game, Sam Houston banked 15 of 18 free throws, assuring their win.
For the end results of the game, SHSU had 43 rebounds, had 23 points inside the paint, and shot 85.3 percent from the foul line.
The win also garnered attention for the Sam Houston State Bearkats. They are now ranked No. 4 in NCAA Division I women’s basketball for most improved record, having gone from 1-28 last season to 6-12 this season, and are now 3-2 in the SLC.
They have now won four game in a row at SHSU. Adding more incentive, the 90 point win is also the most by the Bearkats in the Southland conference since they last defeated Nicholls State 91-78 in 2004.
The Bearkats will visit Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Saturday, January 31. They will be back at SHSU Wednesday, February 4 when they host UT-San Antonio at 6:30.
