Bearkat sports go big with Fox

Beginning next Wednesday, the 12th Street Sports Bar, a locally-produced sports talk show covering Sam Houston State and other collegiate athletics, will air on primetime nationally on Fox College Sports network. The program has been airing in Huntsville over the last two years as Sam Houston State’s source for regional and national college sports.

For the last eight months senior Mass Comm. Major Michael Oder has hosted the 12th Street Sports Bar, in collaboration with local sports writers and analysts who give their opinions and views on college sports. According to Oder, what makes the 12th Street Sports Bar different from other local shows is the ESPN-stylized surrounding that the commentators enjoy while discussing the games. A set resembling a bar serves as the background for the show, providing a comfortable atmosphere for the show’s commentators to talk and a pleasing scene for viewers to watch.

“Its regular people at a bar talking about Sam Houston State stuff. Mainly it’s all college talk, all the time.” Odor said.

The show doesn’t have any set topics, however, the leading discussion always consists of SHSU sports topics.

The 12th Street Sports Bar tapes on Mondays and airs locally every Wednesday at 5 p.m. throughout Walker County on Channel 78. For the remainder of the week, the segment airs locally in different time slots of the day. With Fox College Sports network picking up 12th Street Sports Bar, the program will air nationally in Pacific, Central and Eastern time zones starting Feb. 4.

“Having the opportunity to have the show recognized on a national stage makes me hope people will watch it and write to us.” Odor said. “Hopefully they will enjoy it as much as we love making the show.”
