SHSU found themselves upset twice as they lost to the University of Houston Wednesday afternoon.
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Kats appeared to be on the verge of striking first in the bottom of the first inning when first baseman Amy Brown smacked a double to left center field with one out.
Despite SHSU finding themselves with the bases loaded, the Kats were unable to capitalize.
SHSU bounced back in the bottom of the third inning by striking first blood when designated hitter Morgan Mikulin smakced a solo homerun to left center, giving SHSU a 1-0 lead.
Pitcher Brandi Crnkovic managed to outmaneuver the Cougars for five straight innings before UH managed to get on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth thanks to an RBI single by Cougar first baseman Melissa Gregson.
With both teams finding themselves tied by the end of the bottom of the seventh inning at one, it was on to extra innings.
In the top of the eighth inning, Cougar Haley Valis smacked a double to center field scoring two, giving UH a 3-1 lead.
SHSU bounced back with one run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
However, it was not enough as they lost 3-2.
The follow-up game would have the same result as the Kats were unable to walk away with a split in the non-conference series.
The Cougars struck from the start in the top of the first inning when Laurie Wagner hit an RBI-double to give UH the 1-0 lead.
The Kats managed to cut the lead down in half when in the bottom of the fifth inning, Hailey Wiginton hit a single to right field to put SHSU on the board 2-1.
With the Cougars scoring a run in the top of the sixth, SHSU was unable to find the groove to send the game into extra innings, despite the Kats finding themselves with the bases loaded once again in the bottom of the seventh inning.
In both games combined, SHSU batted a .210, having 12 hits in 56 at-bats.
SHSU takes on SLC rival UT-Arlington in a three-game series at Arlington starting Saturday, Apr. 4 at 2 p.m.
