SGA Elections: Presidential candidate- Ryan Bridges

Fellow Bearkats,

My name is Ryan Bridges, and I am running for the office of Student Body President. I am a sophomore general business major with a 3.2 GPA and have an expected graduation date of December 2010. I came into Sam Houston State University in Fall 2007 and was a member of the Freshman Leadership Program for the entirety of my freshman year. Around October 2007, I began putting these leadership skills to work by founding the Kat Krazies, a student organization dedicated to increasing school spirit at sporting events. I was president of this organization from November 2007 until November 2008, when I became the liaison between the Kat Krazies and the Student Government Association.

I became involved in the Student Government Association in Fall of 2008 and quickly became active in the External Affairs committee. Through this committee, I had the opportunity to work hand in hand with student leaders from across the state through the Texas Student Association in the fight to bring down textbook prices, tuition costs, and the general fees associated with attending an institution of higher learning. It was during this time that I was given the title of Local Business Liaison, where I built relationships with local business owners in order to help them thrive in the Huntsville community. It was also during this time that I became a member of the Parking Appeals committee, where my eyes were opened to the absurdity of the tickets my fellow students were receiving. It was here that I dedicated myself to fighting for the rights of the student body.

Soon, I was promoted to External Affairs Chief. In this new position, I continued the fight against rising fees and worked to help build relationships with local businesses. I also began attending City Council meetings in order to represent the student interests at a level outside of our university. I also began strengthening my relationships with the different administrative offices on campus in order to represent student interests directly to the leaders of the university.

I have several goals that I would like to get accomplished during my administration, the first of which is rebuilding and strengthening the bonds between the student body and the Student Government, and the bonds between the Student Government and the university administration. By strengthening these bonds, we as a Student Government can be sure we are accurately representing the student voice and that the university administration will listen to that voice. We will also reach out to as many student organizations as we can so we can get a better picture of how we can serve and represent you.

Another goal I have for this administration is to address the parking issues that plague this campus. I aim to work with the university police department in an effort to fully eliminate the issue of superfluous tickets that are a waste of students’ time and energy, as well as open the parking lots near computer labs and the HKC after 5 p.m. to all students. Another issue I have been fighting against and will continue to fight against is rising tuition and textbook prices. This is a battle that is being fought alongside other universities’ student governments, and I will continue working with them to ease the financial strain on you, the students. Finally, I will reach out to as many organizations as I can in order to uncover and resolve issues not mentioned here, so that I can better serve the interests of the students of this great university.

Fellow Bearkats, on April 15 and 16, you will have the opportunity to collectively raise your voices and vote for the next person to be the President of the student body. I firmly believe that this position is a burden, that it is a position of extreme responsibility that is not to be taken lightly. However, I ask that you allow me to take on this challenge by electing me into office. In this position, I promise to you, the students, that I will fight with all of my energy for your rights and your voice. I will work for every single Sam Houston State student, and I expect you to hold me accountable for every second of every day. Keep in mind, this is the STUDENT government association. I answer directly to YOU.

Let’s work together to give the voice back to the students. EAT ‘EM UP KATS!

Ryan Thomas Bridges
