After a summer of heated competition the heir to Rhett Bomar’s throne has been named.
Blake Joseph, the grad student transfer from the University of Houston, was selected Tuesday night after the scrimmage to lead the Bearkat offense in the 2009 season.
A source close to the team informed The Houstonian on Wednesday morning of the announcement.
“He just overall had the strength, speed, and arm strength,” said head coach Todd Whitten. “The downside is he has only been here three weeks.”
Randolph brought in a years worth of experience and was the heavy favorite going into the summer but it appears that Joseph showed some talent and was able to take the job.
“Randolph had a great camp and I was really proud of him,” Whitten said. “But you can only have one quarterback.”
Blake, who was at one time the starting quarterback at the University of Houston but was replaced by freshman Case Keenum transferred to Sam Houston State University looking to compete in his last year of eligibility.
The Bearkat coaches obviously felt he had a shot at the number one job when they invited him to the school, and Joseph was excited to join on.
“I’m having fun, and I am happy to be here,” said Joseph. “I want to help these guys win.”
If this season is going to be a success it’s going to rest on the broad shoulders of Blake Joseph.
