Free food and flu shots?
It’s an odd idea, but it could become more familiar as the Carriage Inn retirement community gets ready to kick off there first annual “Health Fair”, this Friday, Sept. 4 from 10 a.m to 2 p.m.
All are invited to come out and experience the upcoming event, located up the hill on Lake Road, just down the road from HEB. Krogers will be doing flu shots for $25, a Texas ID or drivers license is required.
“It’s for the community; a free health fair. Free for anyone involved and anyone who attends,” James Rodriguez, Director of Marketing and Leasing at Carriage Inn said.”The mayor is scheduled to attend, we’ve received a lot of donations, and there’s going to be a big barbeque”
The event will be held at Carriage Inn, a retirement community with about 71 memebers, who recently participated in a “YMCA Backpack Drop”.
“The drop provided school supplies and letters of encouragement from the residents to school children. We’re not assisted living or nursing. It is fully independent retirement living. We have a lot of activities. As a matter of fact, one of residents jumped out of a airplane last month–with a parachute” Rodriguez said with a laugh.
Rodriguez said the upcoming flu season was the reason his wheels began to turn with the “Health Fair” idea.
“I wanted to give the community the opportunity to get the flu shots. It went from there, I just ran with it and now it’s this huge thing,” he said. “The blood bank will be here with their bus. It’s really important for the people to give back to community, to the hospitals, and to give blood.”Krogers will be doing flu shots for $25, a Texas ID or drivers license is required.
Anyone who is interested in joining in on the action or donating is more than welcome.
“Kroger donated hot dogs and buns, we are going to supply soft drinks, we had Tabasco and Welches also donate some drinks and sundried raisins,” Rodriguez said. “When you give blood you need sugar and nourishment. So if anyone would like to donate, anything that would help out the person giving blood, just give us a call and we’ll go from there.”
