Thinking Sharp

Out of sight and out of mind, the elections seem so far away.

Hoping to get a head start on student involvement, the Bearkat Democrats are proud to announce their special guest speaker: former Texas Comptroller and candidate for the United States Senate from Texas, John Sharp. From near and far, all are in invited to hear Sharp’s words when he makes his appearance on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, at 2:30 p.m., in the Olsen Auditorium of Academic Building IV. Donations will be accepted but are not required to attend.

“This event is hosted with the intent to allow students of Sam Houston State, and members of the Huntsville community, to become more informed about the upcoming elections and to help them learn more about such a great candidate,” Bearkat Democrats’ press release said.

The Texas politician graduated with a Bachelors degree from Texas A&M University and has had a variety of jobs and accomplishments since then, such as the Travis fund.

“Sharp created the Travis Fund and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for special scholarships for the children of Texas-based soldiers killed while fighting terrorism in Afghanistan or Iraq. In 2006, he co-chaired a bi-partisan panel of financial and policy experts to find a way to keep public school classroom doors open for the fall semester,” John Sharp’s website said.

Those who don’t know of Sharp’s history can find out more about him on his website at http://www.johnsharp.com. In the meantime, the Bearkat Democrats extend a warm welcome to their guest.

“It is very possible that he could be the next senator from the Great State of Texas, and if that is the case, we want him to think highly of our University and its attendees,” Kendall Scudder, president of the Bearkat Democrats said. “We are very excited to have a great public servant such as Mr. Sharp here at SHSU, and I’m looking forward to seeing students have the opportunity to express concerns.”
