It’s a small world.
Since 1917, clubs in over two hundred countries, headed by business owners, with over one million members worldwide have worked to help people keep their sight.
Sam Houston is among the international few to charter this pride.
For those that have never heard of the Lions Club, they are the world’s largest community service organization, serving both large and small areas. They focus on disaster relief, hunger issues, community beautification, camp counseling, and everything in between. Their main focus is preserving sight all around the world, as Helen Keller visited the club in her day, asking Lions to be “Knights of the Blind”. They took up that charge, and now do several projects annually, such as sending eye surgeons to underdeveloped countries and taking the blind shopping at Christmas. All in all, Lions exist to serve, no matter how big or small the job required is.
Though many clubs are built around a town, and mostly comprised of local business owners, college campus clubs have been on the rise in recent years.
SHSU is one of the few schools in the nation to have a Lions club, and this is not just a mini-club, reporting to the larger Huntsville club, the SHSU Campus Lions Club is an internationally recognized official Lions Club.
Since they began in February of 2008, the campus club has done several projects, including a community-wide bayou cleanup of Orange, Texas, a Christmas toy drive for Texas Children’s Hospital, and working a weekend at the Texas Lions Camp, a summer camp for disabled children. “For this semester, we’ll be planting gardens at local schools, doing a talent show at a nursing home, cleaning up the Sam Houston Memorial Grounds, and so much more,” Lion Britney Mann, a two-year board member said. “The Lions Club is full of such wonderful people, all around the world, all working for a common goal, it’s great to be a part of that.”
