Debate Team returns from another exceptional weekend

In what has become an almost expected result, the SHSU Speech and Debate team won multiple awards and recognitions last weekend at the LSU-Alexandria “Oak Tree Swing” debate tournament.

The entire SHSU debate team was awarded the second place sweepstakes award for overall performance which is the team’s highest award to date.

“This is the best weekend, competition wise, that we’ve ever had,” Head Coach Adam Key said.

Team members Adesuwa Omoruyi, Clayton Goss, and Jeremy Coffman advanced to elimination rounds. Omoruyi, also a team captain, took second place overall in the Varsity Division.

Addison Reed and Adam Key advanced to elimination rounds in the Professional Division.

Reed, Key, Goss, Omoruyi, Grayson Posey and Heather Linder all received speaker awards for their performances.

In the team portion of the tournament, SHSU “closed out,” meaning that both teams in the finals round were from SHSU. The teams of Clayton Goss and Addison Reed, and Adam Key and Jeremy Coffman were declared co-champions.

The debate team will next be in action the weekend of November 5 at the LSU-Shreveport Red River Classic.

Students interested in joining the team are encouraged to contact Adam Key via email at amk023@shsu.edu.
