Beaumont, Tx. – Lamar overcame a 7-1 deficit to post a 14-7 victory over Sam Houston State Sunday afternoon, completing a three-game series sweep of the Bearkats.
The Cardinals posted their 14 runs on 10 hits, three Sam Houston errors, six bases on balls and four hit batsmen.
Sam Houston totaled 15 hits with both Chris Andreas and Greg Olson totaling three hits. Two of Andreas’ singles scored runs as the Bearkats built a 7-1 lead with one run in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings and three in the top of the seventh. Michael Hilliard posted two RBIs with a run-scoring single and a solo home run.
Daniel Nottebart and Jessie Plumlee also had RBI singles.
Pablo Salinas got the Cardinals’ comeback started with a two-run double in a three-run seventh inning. Revin Roebuck blasted a grand slam home run in a seven-run eight inning.
Both teams used five pitchers. Brent Powers,
Sam Houston’s starter, went five and two thirds innings. Matt Shelton was the loser in relief.
The loss dropped the Bearkats to 15-22 on the season and 8-10 in their league games. Lamar stands 23-15 for the year and 9-9 in Southand play.
Next action for Sam Houston will be a non-conference road game at Waco with Baylor at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday night. The Bearkats will host Nicholls in a three-game Southland series at Don Sanders Stadium Friday through Sunday, April 23-25.
