The seniors of the 2012 Sam Houston State football team showed their skills for various NFL scouts when they hosted a pro day Tuesday at Bowers Stadium. Scouts from the Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos, Buffalo Bills, San Francisco 49ers, Atlanta Falcons, St. Louis Rams and Houston Texans all gathered on the field as the seniors tried their hardest to impress them.
The Houston Texans were particularly interested in senior wide receiver Trey Diller. So much so that they invited him to work out for them.
“Had a good enough pro day to already have a workout with the Houston Texans,” Diller said on Twitter. “Got the call this morningàwaiting to get the final date set up. God is good.”
His workout is scheduled for April 3, also according to Diller’s Twitter account.
Diller could be a true steal as an undrafted free agent or a late round pick while being a good weapon for Gary Kubiak’s team on both offense and special teams.
In 2012, he led the Bearkats in receiving with 62 catches, 927 yards and four touchdowns. He also proved to be an effective punt and kick returner, as he finished third in the Southland Conference in both categories. He was also the conference’s all-purpose yardage leader, according to houstonsportblog.com.
It’s not as if Diller would be an automatic starter for the Texans, but he could build up by being in the slot for a while and eventually become a secret weapon, much like Danny Amendola, who recently signed with the New England Patriots.
Senior Linebacker Darius Taylor was also a standout at the pro day. He was confident in most of his exercises and he really excelled in certain events, such as agility.
“I felt good,” Taylor said. “I came out here and felt like I performed well in everything. Now I’m waiting to see what we have next.”
Taylor is one of the strongest linebackers coming out of the FCS and teams that are thin when it comes to defense had a sharp eye pointed at him Tuesday.
“I held my own,” Taylor said. “I’m excited to see what happens.”
One scout present said that the group had a good overall day. According to NFL.com, the team will host another pro day on March 24 at Bowers Stadium.
