Five of Sam Houston State University’s most talented art students have their work on display in the heart of Huntsville’s downtown.
“Independents: V” is a student exhibition currently showing at the SHSU Satellite Gallery. The show is composed of work from the Workshop in Art Studio and History program known as WASH, which is a program unique to the university.
WASH is designed to be an introductory course into the art and visual arts programs offered at SHSU. The program consists of a studio and lecture course offered to art majors that allow them to explore various aspects of contemporary art.
The WASH program selects students to serve as mentors for the program, which most art students partake in early in their studies at SHSU. As a mentor, they must assume a leadership position and assist with the studio portion of the class while also completing a piece of art through an independent study course.
Keyton Berry, Brittney Butler, Katelyn Newman, Casey Morgan and Macy Pennington are the WASH members whose work is on display.
“This exhibition will highlight the wide range of projects by these student leaders, many of whom have taken creative risks to work in materials outside of their comfort zone and area of concentration,” Valerie Powell, assistant art professor and “Independents: V” curator, said to Today @ Sam.
Visiting professor Ron Hollingshead also curated the exhibit.
Along with the SHSU students, there are two guest artists who have pieces on exhibit in the Gaddis Geeslin Gallery. “Anything That Has A Front” opened Tuesday and includes pieces from the couple that express their interest on human experiences.
The student exhibit opened Aug. 28 and will be open until Sept. 10, and “Anything That Has A Front” will run until Oct. 9.
