One of the most common questions graduating students have before earning their degrees is “will I have a job after college?”
Two departments at Sam Houston State University have made efforts to help students find their future employers at two events today.
The department of career services will hold a ‘kick-off party” for its upcoming Career Expo from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Students attending the event will get to meet representatives from the various corporations and businesses that will attend the Career Expo later this month.
Mitch Parker, Career Services marketing and events coordinator, said in a statement that students can obtain many resources at today’s preview.
“Students will be able to network with the company recruiters while enjoying refreshments,” he said. “Résumé template packets and an up-to-date list of organizations and graduate schools attending the expo will be available to help students prepare for the event.”
Parker said students hunting for jobs are recommended to use the list of attending companies to prepare themselves for potential interviews at the Career Expo.
“First impressions count, and students who are knowledgeable about an organization prior to meeting that organization’s recruiter at the expo will make a great first impression with that potential employer,” he said.
This evening, the SHSU department of accounting will host “Meet the Firms Night” from 6-8:30 p.m.
With more than 35 firms scheduled to attend, professor and accounting department chair Phillip Morris said in a statement that “Meet the Firms Night” will cater to students of all ages looking for different opportunities.
“Meet the Firms is an annual event that the department of accounting has sponsored since the late 1990s,” he said. “It brings together employers seeking primarily accounting majors—though a few firms may also be interested in finance or management information system students—and the accounting students who are seeking employment. Because employers are seeking to fill both full-time and internship positions, accounting students of all classifications, from freshmen to graduate students, are encouraged to attend.”
Career services Career Expo and Graduate School Fair is scheduled for Sept. 24.
