SHSU scores four again, defeat Devils 4-1

Sam Houston State soccer got on the board early and didn’t let the lead go against Northwestern State on Friday at Pritchett Field.

The Bearkats took the 4-1 victory over the Lady Demons to improve their Southland Conference record to 3-1.

Six minutes into the match, sophomore forward Allie Johnson headed a cross into the upper-left corner of the goal for the quick 1-0 lead. The goal gave Johnson her fifth goal of the season after only scoring one in 2013.

Freshman defender Caitlin Schwartz was able to double the lead when she was left open inside the box on a corner kick with six minutes left in the first half. Schwartz buried the open volley to the back of the net off junior midfielder Mariah Titus’ corner.

Titus was able to work her set piece magic once more before the final whistle. On a free kick on the far right side with less than 20 minutes left in the second half, Titus sent a pass to junior forward Ashley Alonzo who flicked the ball to junior midfielder Shelby McDaniel for the goal.

SHSU was almost able to earn its first shutout of the season but gave up a goal late off a corner kick with a little over six minutes left in the game. A minute later, the Lady Demons found the net again, just on their own goal.

The Bearkats travel to Nacogdoches on Sunday to take on rival Stephen F. Austin State. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
