Spivey to turn haunted on Halloween

The Spivey Honors College House will revive its haunted house tradition this year as Halloween festivities make their way to campus this week.

Members of the Spivey Hall residence along with the Honors College and other students plan to create a scare for all Bearkats to enjoy for the first time since 2012, as the hall transforms into a haunted house.

Senior psychology major and member of the honors program Megan Sherer was in charge of promoting the event through flyers posted around campus. She said the collaborative effort has been in the works for the past few weeks.

“We have a lot of people in the house helping out,” Sherer said. “Everyone is really excited about it, we’ve been working on it since the beginning of October.”

The festive haunted house will not only entertain visitors, but it will also serve as a giving back project. The Honors program is giving all proceeds from the haunted house to the SAAFE House, which works to create a safe haven for those who are experiencing an abusive relationship or any situation that needs refuge.

Sherer said working with the SAAFE House is a great opportunity for students to give back to the community.

“[SAAFE House] is kind of like a women’s home,” Sherer said. “You can actually donate clothes and other goods to them as well. We just want to do our part and give all our proceeds to a good cause.”

The Spivey Haunted House is also a once-lost tradition. It began in 2008 and occurred annually until 2012. It was brought back this year by its residents and those in honors program that remember the fun it was.

The price to enter the Haunted House will be $3 and costumes and candy are all welcome.

The Haunted House will be open tomorrow at 7 p.m. in the Spivey Residence House across the street from the CHSS Building.
