Sam Houston State extended its Battle of the Piney Woods win streak to four with a 42-28 win against Stephen F. Austin State at NRG Stadium on Saturday.
Senior running back Keshawn Hill ran 14 times for 160 yards and four touchdowns, being one shy from the most rushing touchdowns in a single game, set by former Bearkat Timothy Flanders.
Hill set the pace for SHSU to find their way on the ground game with a total of 345 yards as a team. Despite not dominating the time of possession, the Bearkats were still able to find a rhythm on offense.
Sophomore quarterback Jared Johnson finished the game going only 6 for 17 with 127 yards, but saw his most success on the ground with 152 yards. He also added a 2-yard rushing touchdown. Sophomore running back Jalen Overstreet added the sixth touchdown on a 52-yard run late in the fourth quarter.
Heading into the BOTPW, head coach K.C. Keeler biggest worry was stopping SFA’s Gus Johnson. SHSU allowed SFA to run for 250 yards with Gus Johnson having 148 of those.
SHSU played a cleaner game opposed to last week’s tough game on penalties. SFA, however, had trouble being disciplined, finishing the game with nine penalties for 80 yards and seeing a touchdown called back in the first quarter.
The Bearkats will next face off against Incarnate Word next Saturday in San Antonio at 6 p.m.
