Sam Houston State soccer clinched the second spot in the Southland Conference tournament after a 2-0 win to Nicholls State on Sunday at Pritchett Field.
The win provides SHSU with its highest seeding in school history and gives the Bearkats a first-round bye in the SLC tournament next weekend.
Senior midfielder Madison Bible celebrated her senior day with her third goal of the season, and career, by breaking the tie midway through the second half. Junior midfielder Mariah Titus sent a rocket off a cross, and Bible was able to get just the right knick to get the ball into the back of the net.
The Kats notched its third shutout in a row in Sunday’s game. Sophomore defender Megan Bennett led the shutout but also contributed on the offensive side of the ball.
After missing a penalty kick in the first half, Bennett was able to finish a corner kick to give the Bearkats a two-goal lead.
SHSU will now travel to Beaumont for the SLC tournament this weekend and will take on the highest seeded team out of the first round results.
