SHSU takes nail-biter 65-64 over SFA

Sam Houston State’s women’s basketball pulled out the nail bitter against rival Stephen F. Austin State 65-64. With the win, the Kats improve their conference record to 4-4.

In the first half, the Bearkats came out with a lack of effort on the defensive end, giving up 16 points in the paint. The Kats limited SFA senior forward Porsha Roberts to 10 points in the first half.

The Bearkats struggled with containing Lumberjacks’ three-pointers. The Lumberjacks saw easy looks from behind the arc that almost proved costly to the Kats’ demise.

The Kats struggled with ball movement on the offensive end in the first half, which led to a dismal 34.8 percent shooting from the field. The Kats also gave up 10 points from turnovers in the first half.

The Bearkats adjusted in the second half.

“I told them at halftime it was going to come down to post play,” head coach Brenda Wells-Nichols said. “It was a battle in the post, and our post battled hard.”

Junior guard Shernise Robertson led the Bearkats in scoring with 21 points, filling in for key absences in the Kats’ rotation this season with senior post Angela Beadle out with injury as well as junior guard Amanda Barnes.

“This was a great team effort,” Robertson said. “If it wasn’t for the post we wouldn’t have won the game.”

In the second half, the Kats had good ball movement and took smarter shots.

This win moves the Kats to the middle of the pack in Southland Conference.

SHSU will take on Lamar next at home on Thursday.
