The Great Bearkat Shootout, hosted by the Grove apartments and the department of athletics, wrapped up Saturday leaving a Sam Houston State University student left with six months free rent.
Jamarcus Jones, freshman pre-physical therapy major, will have no rent to pay for half a year at The Grove beginning next leasing year. Jones said he has plans for the money he is saving.
“Hopefully, [I’ll] get a better car,” Jones said. “And I’d like to help my mom and dad pay for tuition.”
The Great Bearkat Shootout finals took place during Saturday’s men’s basketball game verses Stephen F. Austin State University.
One wild card participant selected through a raffle at the game joined finalists from the preliminary rounds during the final shootout. The contestants shot free throws during halftime, leaving Jones as the last one standing.
The Bearkats would go on to lose that game 79-68.
