Boatner tied for lead, SHSU third at UTSA Oak Hills Invitational

Senior Logan Boatner leads Sam Houston State’s men’s golf team with a share of the individual lead at the Texas-San Antonio Oak Hills Invitational on Monday.

After two rounds, the team heads into today tied for third place against Houston Baptist.

“The tournament is great,” head coach Brandt Kieschnick said. “Very good field, they played a solid second round led by senior Logan Boatner. I feel very good about this team. They compete well, and we feel good about the third round.”

Boatner started off the tournament by shooting a 72, which was the lowest score for the team in the first round. He then managed to lower his score by six strokes in the second round, scoring the lowest again out of the team. Boatner stands tied for first with Preston Stanley from Houston Baptist and Baylor’s Kyle Jones.

Senior Zach Cabra and freshman Jake McCrory both ended the first day tied for 28th place. Cabra shot a 74 in the first round and a 73 in the second while McCrory shot a 75 in the first round and ended the day by shooting a 72. They currently sit tied with Alec Heinen from Wichita State.

J.T. Taylor, one of the other seniors on the team, shot a 75 in both of the rounds in the tournament yesterday. This leaves Taylor tied for 45th place tied against five other players.

Sophomore Andrew Ertel began the day by shooting a 77 in the first and second rounds, landing him in 64th place tied against Mikk Bjerch-Andresen from Baylor and Conner Barr from Northern Colorado.

Playing individually, sophomore Kyle Hodges tied in 38th place shooting a 78 in the first round and 71 in the second.

The Oak Hills Invitational tournament will finish today as the players begin the third round in the morning. SHSU tees off at 9 a.m.
