I tried to play it cool when I was told Panic! at the Disco was playing this year’s Sammypalooza by rolling my eyes with my more tasteful classmates, but my inner 14-year-old self was raising one eyebrow with intrigue.
I would like to say that I keep up with the coolest unknown hipster bands, but the truth is that I am just too busy ruining people’s lives with has-been garbage. Call me maniacal as I singlehandedly ruined a house party circa 2012 by playing Miley Cyrus’ Party in the USA on repeat for 20 minutes straight.
Is my music taste sarcastic or am I merely creating a sarcastic facade to disguise my secret love for popularly un-popular music?
Either way, I was wondering what Panic! at the Disco had been up to for the last couple of years so I started my digging where I last left off with them- on MySpace.
Yes, they still have a MySpace profile, and yes, it has not been updated since 2009.
Their first album “A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out” was released in 2005 with their hit single “I Write Sins Not Tragedies”, was followed up in 2008 with “Pretty”. Odd. and in 2011 with “Vices & Virtues”.
Their last album entitled “Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die”! was released in 2013, and this is where my research got weird when I uncomfortably watched YouTube videos of Brendon Urie overly dramatically singing songs off of their newest album with not a hint of eyeliner.
After two albums together, lead vocalist Brendon Urie is the last of the original Panic! members, his third album Vices & Virtues being his first with his new band members and, in my opinion, marks the beginning of the end.
I may have questionable taste in what I find to be entertaining music (I spent a good part of 2009 forcing my unwilling classmates to listen to the Moldy Peaches song These Burgers) but even I know that Panic! at the Disco’s latest album is just down right bad as it delves in to mainstream, sell-out pop, a disappointing transition that also manifested in the likes of Fall Out Boy and Paramore. I truly believe alternative rock is officially dead.
But all good things must come to an end, some you wish sooner rather than later so as to go out on top, and, following in the diva steps of Justin Timberlake and Beyoncé, Urie’s fifth album may be a solo venture.
Wow, for someone who admits to playing 'Party in the USA' for 20 straight minutes, aren't you being a bit harsh on poor old Panic! At the disco? If you had done any proper research into the band you might have actually found that while the band has had it's issues over the years, it does actually still possess two members of the original line up, being both Brendon Urie and Spencer Smith (who is currently on hiatus, but is still an official member of the band and contributed to/recorded on both the Vices & Virtues and Too Weird records), and also continues to have an incredibly strong and supportive fan base. We can't expect people and styles to remain the same after 10 years now can we? I'm sure you are dramatically different to how you were ten years ago. You might have also noticed that all four panic albums are completely different, with the band exploring many different areas and styles of music - they (yeah, the whole band) are currently working on a fifth album which I'm certain will be different again. Perhaps you should stick with Miley?
EXACTLY! And not one of those four different albums was "alternative rock". Who hired this person? Did she even go to the show? Because it was absolutely amazing.
Not quite sure how much I want to listen to or read about your opinion seeing as you admit to playing "Party in the USA" for 20 minutes straight, and even go on to discuss how you tried to "follow the crowd" by agreeing with your "more tasteful classmates." If liking P!ATD and their music, even their most recent music makes me immature and not tasteful, then so be it. I would rather have my own opinion and not be ashamed to admit I like something because I'm afraid it goes against the norm unlike yourself.
Somebody clearly has no music taste whatsoever. That much i can tell by the lack of research done on this "article".
