Picking a university is often a daunting and difficult task for graduating high school seniors. There are many factors to consider such as location and programs offered.
Saturdays@Sam is the biannual campus visitation day that offers a way for prospective students to come with their families and see what Sam Houston State University has to offer.
“The entire university really comes together to make this event happen,” Courtney Chastine, on-campus recruitment manager, said. “We work with all academic colleges [and] departments, all student service departments and student organizations.”
Various university officials will be available to assist prospective students in getting their SHSU careers started.
“All of the enrollment service departments are open to make sure students can apply, get accepted, receive academic advising and even register for classes,” Chastine said. “Each academic department has a representative on hand to speak personally to students. Residence Life even opens up almost all of the housing facilities for tours. We think of this event as a big campus open house.”
Events like Saturdays@Sam offer more than a normal tour. The event will allow prospective students to meet current SHSU students. They can check out different organizations from Greek life to club sports and more.
“People can expect to learn a lot about SHSU and to really see our campus in action,” Chastine said. “There are departmental demonstrations, off-campus facility open houses as well as everything that is taking place around campus, including academic, involvement and service fairs. Visitors can dine on campus and accepted students can even take a picture with Sammy [the] Bearkat with New Student Orientation.”
For prospective students who are unable to attend Saturdays@Sam, campus tours are hosted for individuals and groups every week.
The university also hosts events throughout the year to constantly show-off campus.
“We also host Scouts@SAM, which is a merit badge event for boy and girl scouts coming up this April 25,” Chastine said. “We also facilitate all campus summer camp programs, which bring over 3,000 students to campus each year for various academic, athletic and arts programs.”
Prospective and accepted students are welcome and encouraged to bring their family and guests.
The event will take place Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. with students gathering at the Johnson Coliseum.
