Ted Cruz, who?

As a boyband enthusiast, you more than likely will not find someone who is as enthusiastic about boybands as me. From knowing random facts to attending as many concerts as possible, I have been there, done that. I am what they call a ‘super fan.’ So as you can imagine, I was a bit shocked to find out that Zayn Malik of One Direction is leaving the band.

Now, I would not say that I am a fan of this particular band, but I do like their music. The band appeals to my age group because young ladies find them good looking, enjoy their angsty, sex driven music and their British accents.

But, just because Zayn is leaving the band does not mean that the world is going to end. I get that he is part of the band, and that he is a ‘big deal’ but does him leaving the band really warrant extreme activity? What’s more, do you think that knowing who Zayn Malik is relevant to your life? How is this more important than knowing that Ted Cruz is running for president?

For today’s Word on the Street, we asked students what they thought about Ted Cruz announcing his candidacy in the 2016 presidential election. You know, if they thought he had a chance at the Republican nomination, and maybe even a chance at becoming the next president of the United States. More often than not, students did not know who Ted Cruz was. However, they did know who Zayn Malik was and that he is leaving One Direction.

What has the world come to? I am in no way saying that knowing about music is a terrible thing. It is not, I like music more than I do people most of the time. However, just because my life revolves around music and I know, I guess you could say, prominent names within the music industry, does not mean I should be oblivious to things that do not involve music.

I am well aware of the world around me. I know who the president and vice president are (you would be surprised by the amount of people who do not know that Joe Biden is VP), I know who the Texas governor is and I know who Ted Cruz is. I know who all is in power because their actions have an effect on my life. The decisions they make while in office as my representative impact how I go about my life, so yes, I do think it is important to know who these people are and what they stand for.

The point I am trying to make is this: if you were more concerned about people and things that can affect them rather than pop culture, the world might make a little more sense. As I said before, there is absolutely nothing wrong with knowing about things like that. However, your knowledge of the world should extend far beyond that.
