IT@Sam, appeals delay election results

The results of the student government elections for the 2015-16 school year were not made available last night due to an IT@Sam worker going home early.

According to Dean of Students John Yarabeck, the IT employee in charge of transferring the results to Yarabeck left for the day before doing so. He expects the results at 8:30 a.m. today. Check with HoustonianOnline.com periodically for updates.

But students at Sam Houston State University will not know the true results of the elections until a disqualification appeal is heard by the SGA Supreme Court. The appeal was filed Wednesday and could jeopardize the results and affect how the votes are counted.

The “New Deal” ticket was disqualified by the election commission Wednesday for campaigning past the deadline, but their campaign manager Troy Ross filed an appeal to that decision. If the Supreme Court denies Ross’ appeal, the votes cast for those on the ticket will not be counted and the final results will be calculated by tallying the votes cast for the remaining candidates.

SGA Vice President and Election Coordinator Brooke Hunter said regardless of the appeal ruling, there will likely be runoffs for some executive board positions.
