Kats win weekend series with Wildcats

Sam Houston State baseball took the weekend series 2-1 over Abilene Christian in Abilene this past weekend.

The Bearkats swept the doubleheader Saturday after Friday’s game was pushed back due to weather. The Kats dropped the series finale Sunday in extra innings, ending their eight-game winning streak.

In game one of the series, ACU jumped to an early lead scoring five runs off SHSU senior Andrew Godail in the first three innings. Godail allowed five runs, two earned on five hits in his three innings on the mound. Godail added three strikeouts and three walks in his outing. The Wildcats failed to add to the scoreboard after the third inning.

The Kats recorded two runs within the first two innings behind a couple RBI doubles but were forced to rally the rest of the game as SHSU trailed ACU 5-2 after three.

SHSU cut its deficit in the fourth inning with an RBI single from senior Colt Atwood. The Kats tied the game up with a two-run fifth inning as the game was tied heading into the ninth.

Atwood touched home plate following freshman Bryce Johnson’s game-winning single to take the 6-5 victory.

The Kats recorded 13 hits in the game and the SHSU pitchers held ACU to two hits following the third inning.

The Kats swept the doubleheader with an 8-2 win in the second game, recording 12 hits led by a 4-for-5 performance from senior Jake MacWilliam at the plate.

SHSU used two three-run innings in the first and sixth to help take the series victory.

Junior Logan Boyd received his fifth win of the season as he delivered eight dominate innings on the mound allowing eight hits.

Sunday’s series finale saw the Kats were an out away from a series sweep before ACU knocked a game-tying two-run bomb to force the game into extras. The Wildcats walked off in the tenth with their second bomb of the game to steal the third game from the Kats.

Sophomore Sam Odom spread out four hits in six innings on the mound and added three strikeouts. Senior Alex Bisacca did not allow a hit in his five outs on the mound. Junior Jordan Church allowed two runs on three hits and junior Ryan Brinley received the loss giving up the ACU walk-off homer.

SHSU sits 22-20 following the series win including a 13-8 record in the Southland Conference.

“I think this weekend was good for us,” senior Colt Atwood said. “We really hit the ball well and pitched it great all weekend. It would have been nice to get the sweep, but we will take two of three. We need to build off the way we are playing and go up to Oklahoma and expect to win a series.”

The Kats have a midweek break this week as they prepare for their weekend series against the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma.
