Winner’s Concert to showcase top talent

The Sam Houston State University School of Music will host its Winner’s Concert tonight in the Gaertner Performing Arts Center Recital Hall.

Director of the School of Music Scott Plugge, D.M.A., said the event will showcase winners of the Art Song and Concerto Contests.

Plugge said audiences can expect to see high quality performances by outstanding young musicians at the annual concert, while highlighting the accomplishments of several students in the school of music.

“It highlights some of our finest students and is a mixture of instrumental and vocal performances,” Plugge said. “This is the event where we announce our special scholarship winners and recipients for the year.”

Senior music major Brenden Johnson participated in the Concerto Competition and was named as one of the two winners and gained the opportunity to participate in the Winner’s Concert.

“I will be participating in the Winner’s Concert on Tuesday night,” Johnson said. “I will be performing the second movement of Henri Tomasi’s Saxophone Concerto titled ‘Giration’ with my pianist Nicole Niederer.”

Johnson said he is excited to perform in front of the crowd during the Winner’s Concert while hearing the other musicians as well.

“I am very much looking forward to the event and having a chance to hear all of my colleagues perform as well,” Johnson said. “This is my last major performance of the semester, and I am excited that I get to share this experience with my friends and professors.”

Given that this is not the first year for the event, Johnson said being able to perform in a concert of this notability is an honor.

“This event has always been an exciting showcase of the immense talent we have at Sam Houston throughout all of our departments,” Johnson said. “I am extremely blessed to be included this year.”

The Winner’s Concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the GPAC Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the public.
