The Healthier Option

Finding a healthy meal to eat on campus is not the easiest. Other than Old Main Market, your healthy choices are not always obvious and the temptation for something greasy is very taunting. Favorites like waffle fries from Chick-fil-A or your own personal sized pizza from Pizza Hut are not ideal when trying to eat healthy. Good nutrition is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Along with exercising, your diet can help you to reach and maintain a healthier weight as well as improve your overall health. Since options may seem limited on campus, here are a few choices when eating between classes.

Paw Print

The LSC’s Paw Print has a variety of places to get a bite to eat. Whether it’s Pizza Hut, Subway or Chick-fil-A, you can always find something that is filling but not full of calories. When buying food at paw print, limit yourself to one item. Don’t get fries from Chick-fil-A and a pizza from Pizza Hut; only choose one! You could also get a Chick-fil-a salad or ask for a grilled chicken sandwich. Subway is well known for their efforts to provide a healthier option when it comes to fast food. When making your sub sandwich, choose wheat bread, try adding more vegetables, and ask for a small amount of condiments. To go with your meal, try to purchase water and stay away from soda! Sugary drinks will have a negative effect on your healthy meal.

South Paw

“Welcome to Moe’s” where your burrito is filled with calories! Eating at South Paw’s Moe’s Southwest Grill is a great location to get some good food, but hard to make a healthy decision. Students who use their meal plan at Moe’s are already one step ahead by getting their smaller portion junior burrito. A smaller tortilla means less calories! You can try filling your burrito with lettuce and other vegetables. Also, try to limit extra add-ons like cheese and sour cream. If your taste buds aren’t excited about a burrito, try Moe’s quesadillas or tacos. I would only recommend eating one of Moe’s delicious plates of nachos if you plan to eat them with a friend because they are high in calories.

Einstein Bros. Bagel

Located in the Gaertner Performing Arts Center and the LSC, Einstein Bros. Bagel is the perfect place to find a quick healthy meal. Try a simple plain bagel with plain cream cheese, or the even healthier option, no cream cheese. There is also fresh fruit, pre-made sandwiches, as well as sandwiches made-to-order that would be hale and hearty when trying to have a balanced diet.

As you can see there are many healthy choices all around campus. Don’t forget about the convenient pods located in the CHSS and Lee Drain building providing protein bars, fruit, and sandwiches. To eat healthy on campus, you must make it healthy! It all depends on what you choose to eat and how much to consume. Most of these locations have the amount of calories listed for each item and you can add it up yourself! For more information on your options, visit the SHSU dining website.
