Last week was a tough one for the Sam Houston State Women’s Basketball team as they competed against Abilene Christian and Stephen F. Austin.
SHSU traveled to Nacogdoches where they took on Stephen F. Austin Saturday afternoon. SFA handed the Bearkats a loss at 70-63.
The Jacks got to a fast start in the beginning of the game.
In the first 4 minutes the Bearkats were already down by 11, which made it difficult for them to stay close. This put the Bearkats at 3-5 in the Southland Conference.
Last Thursday the Bearkats hosted Abilene Christian at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum. The team lost 87-76.
It was still an important game for senior center Angela Beadle, who produced 24 points and 17 rebounds. She also tied the school’s record for eight blocks during the match.
Throughout the game the Bearkats never let up easy. Yet, a few miscues may have been the keys to their loss.
The ACU Bears executed a strong passing game and were able to capitalize on their chances from the Bearkats’ mistakes.
“Those were two tough battles, and unfortunately we came up short,” senior guard Amanda Barnes said.
The senior believes that her team is capable of winning as long as they continue to focus on getting better in every practice and prepare for future games.
As of now, the Bearkats rank 8 right under Houston Baptist, who they will be taking on this week along with Lamar.
“We have been fighting hard every game and have lost a few close ones,” Barnes said. “In this conference you have to be able to move on quickly and focus on the next game and that’s what we’re doing now.”
The team will travel to Beaumont to play against Lamar Wednesday night. Then they’ll be on their way to Houston on Saturday to take on Houston Baptist.
