There is more to the athletes at Sam Houston State University than the sport they play. One of those athletes is forward/center Aurimas Majauskas of the men’s basketball team.
Majauskas, who is originally from Marijampole, Lithuania, is currently double majoring in international business and economics.
“My dream is to play professional basketball,” Majauskas said. “But if that doesn’t work out I’d like to work for a sports agency or an import and export company.”
Majauskas is from a country that loves basketball in the same way American’s love football. Majauskas said his love for the sport sparked at a young age.
“I grew up watching basketball and everyone talked about it where I’m from,” Majauskas said. “My dad used to like playing basketball and I grew up watching him. I was also a little bit taller than the other kids, and from my little days I knew I wanted to play. I knew this was my sport.”
While there’s little time where Majauskas is not playing basketball, in his free time he enjoys watching movies and going places to eat.
“I also really like fishing and soccer,” Majauskas said. “So whenever I can get away from basketball I like to go play soccer and sand volleyball too. I really like sand volleyball.”
Majauskas left Lithuania to play basketball at SHSU and said he enjoys his time in Huntsville.
“It’s a really good college and I really enjoy it here,” Majauskas said. “The coaches, team and people around are awesome, friendly and always willing to help out.”
For the past two seasons Majauskas has accumulated a career percentage of .762 from the line, .565 from the floor, 205 rebounds, 28 assists and 396 points.
Currently, the Bearkats are 6-2 in the Southland Conference and Majauskas feels the team is on their way to a conference victory.
“I think the remainder of the season will go really good,” Majauskas said. “We are getting better and better every practice and working hard. I know we’re going to win.”
