Sam Houston’s golf season tees off

Sam Houston State’s golf teams are set for preparation to start off their spring season in the coming weeks.

 

The men’s team first tournament was Monday February 8 and Tuesday 9.

 

The men played at the Oak Hills invitational at the Oaks Hill Country Club in San Antonio.

 

The men’s team first tournament of the season gave them an idea of what is to come this season.

 

SHSU ended the tournament in ninth place with a first and second round score of 299 and then shot 298 in the third round.

 

The men’s team was led by sophomore Mason Weld, who tied for 14 place. Weld lowered his score every round with a 76 in the first round, a 73 in the second, and a 71 in the third.

 

Senior Andrew Ertel was Sam Houston’s second best player in the tournament.

 

Ertel shot a 77 in the first round, lowered his score in the second round brining his score to a 72. Ertel struggled in the third round when he shot a 76 which put him in 36 place.

 

Baylor came in first starting the tournament with an average score of 291, scored 284 and then went back up to 288. Baylor ended the tournament with the lowest overall score of 863.

 

Oklahoma followed Baylor with 298 in the first round then shot the tournaments lowest team score of 277 and ended with a 293 to sum up to 868.

 

The Bearkats are prepared for their season after adding a couple of new players to the team’s roster, such as Noah Steele from Kingston, Ontario and William Holcomb from Crockett, TX.

 

The women’s team picked up three new players to the team this season from across the globe.

 

Hanna Alberto from Kingwood, TX, Kari Bush from Houston, TX and Gianti Mahardhika from Jakarta Selatan, Indonesia.

 

The Kats will play against some heavy competition this season. Some of their difficult competitions include Baylor, Oklahoma and Louisiana Tech.

 

The men play again February 19 at Golf Club of Houston in Humble, Texas.

 

SHSU’s women’s team will compete in their first tournament February 14 and 15 at Landa Park Golf Course in New Braunfels, Texas.
