Women’s basketball strives for strong finish

Another week, another team, another game and the Sam Houston State Women’s Basketball team are still in war.

The Bearkats pulled off a 78-70 victory over the Houston Baptist University Huskies, which concluded the Bearkats’ three game losing streak.

“Our man-to-man defense hasn’t been great, but the whole week leading up to the game we worked hard to improve on our defense,” freshman guard Kamry Orr said.

Orr made a name for herself this weekend with 19 points and 12 assists.

“I wouldn’t have been able to reach my season high of 12 assists if it wasn’t for my teammates making shots,” Orr said.

Their previous loss to the Huskies only gave SHSU more motivation to beat them this time around.

“Even though we shouldn’t wait until we lose three games in a row to realize how bad we want it, that losing streak brought us together,” Orr said.

The key to a successful team is how they respond to their failures.

This past week the Bearkats traveled to Abilene where they took on ACU once again. Last time the Bearkats faced off with the Sugar Bears, they lost 87 to 76 at home.

The Bearkats lost that game as well. That was SHSU’s 5 consecutive away game.

Yet, the sourness didn’t end there after the Bearkats sweetened things up with a win against Houston Baptist this past Saturday.

Nearly two weeks ago SHSU traveled to Houston where they barely lost 67 to 63. Before the rematch the Bearkats worked on their defense that inevitably translated on the court.

Although this season hasn’t been a smooth ride, the Bearkats have been able to overcome the few bumps in the road and pull out a win.

This week Sam Houston plans to improve and play together.

“Our goal is to win and we will accomplish it by working hard in practice,” Orr said. “We have to play like we played in HBU but even better.”

This weekend SHSU will take on Central Arkansas for the first time at home at 2 p.m.
