A look inside SHSU Golf: Andrew Ertel

Junior Andrew Ertel is a Sam Houston State golfer and Marketing major with a minor in Finance. He plans on a hopeful professional career after he graduates and leaves school.

Andrew Ertel began the sport of golf when he was seven and lived in New Hampshire.

His father introduced him to the game and he loved it ever since.

When Ertel moved to The Woodlands in sixth grade he began to take the game seriously and decided he would like to play the sport competitively.

While playing golf at Woodlands High School, Ertel earned the Highlighted Highlander Award. The award is given to students who have outstanding citizenship, achievement or service.

While at Sam Houston State University Ertel was appointed to the Student Athlete Advisory Committee for athletics.

When Ertel finds some spare time between classes he enjoys quality time with friends golfing and fishing.

Ertel played for the Woodlands High School for four years. While he was there his senior year, he led his team to the district championship and was a state medalist qualifier after he finished second individually at the regional tournament.

Ertel has been Sam Houston’s second top player for both of the tournaments they have competed in this season.

In the first tournament of the year, at UTSA Oak Hills Invitational at San Antonio, Ertel placed 37 after he shot a 77 in the first round, a 72 in the second, and a 76 in the third.

In the second tournament at the All-American Intercollegiate from the Golf Club of Houston Ertel placed 41 after he shot a 75 in the first round, a 72 in the second, and a 77 in the final.

Ertel had positive things to say about the upcoming season and his team.

Even after losing five seniors this year he believes his team can carry on what Ertel calls “the winning tradition of SHSU golf.”

“Our team has come off the momentum of back to back conference championships,” Ertel said.

The team has also had the advantage of an appearance to the NCAA regionals for the past two seasons. The teams main focus is the development of the young players each week and a third straight conference championship.

“The young lineup that we are playing with [is our main focus],” Ertel said. “As well as not graduating any seniors this year, shows that the team is in position to have many good years ahead.”
