Sam Houston State Women’s Basketball currently stands in 7 place right under Lamar in the Southland Conference. While Abilene Christian stands in first with only one loss, the Bearkats have won six out of their season’s 16 games so far.
Following Wednesday’s game against Central Arkansas, the Bearkats took on the Texas A&M- Corpus Christi Islanders at home on Saturday. ESPN3 brought the game live and the Bearkats also brought their A game to beat the Islanders 75-57.
“We played as a team,” junior guard Morgen Day said. “We worked great together and never gave up.”
The victory wasn’t the only impressive part of this game.
Senior guard Shernise Robertson, was the 16 player in Women’s Basketball to score over one thousand points as a Bearkat. The Tyler Junior College transfer has made a name for herself these last two years and nothing seems to faze her.
Senior center Angela Beadle said she believes the best part of this win was watching everyone on her team work hard from the top.
“Everyone that came into the game did their job and it was a great team win,” Beadle said.
SHSU traveled to the University of Central Arkansas February 24 where they took on the Bears for the second time. Just four days before, on February 20, the Bearkats lost by a 10-point gap. Except this time, it was almost double that.
Despite the loss, senior center Angela Beadle came out and posted 18 points for team along with 10 rebounds.
She finished this year off with her “fellow seniors” which is Beadle’s favorite part of her last season.
“I want to look back and know we left it all out on the court,” Beadle said.
Freshman guard Laurynn McGowen also came to play on Wednesday night as she posted 12 points for SHSU. The 72-53 loss was SHSU’s back to back loss against UCA.
Today SHSU takes on Lamar at home. In order for the team to make it to the Conference Tournament, SHSU must win this game.
A little over a month ago the Bearkats traveled to Beaumont and barely beat the Cardinals by two points, 78 to 76.
The team plays at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
