Career Service Hosts Extravaganza

On September the Sam Houston Career Services department will take to the LSC Mall with free food and job opportunities.

The Career services team is one of the many departments at Sam who work directly with students to help them in a variety of ways.

“Career Services is so much more than just career fairs. For students not sure of what to major in or might be considering a degree change, we offer career counseling where counselors meet individually with students to help them explore their interests, values and personality.” Veronica Gonzalez, the groups Marketing and Events Coordinator said.

The list of aid the Career Services provide is extensive, which covers everything from mock interviews to personality quizzes that can help students determine the right career field.

“We also offer one-on-one resume and cover letter critiques, in-person mock interviews, job and internships postings in JOBSforKATS, and mock interview days where corporate sponsors offer their recruiting skills to provide students feedback on their interview performance.” Gonzalez said.

It would be easy to dismiss the services as primarily junior and senior focused, Career Services doesn’t believe it is ever too early to start thinking about the future.

“The process of getting a job out of college starts way before graduation. It starts with exploring your interests and getting involved in those opportunities that will help you explore them, which is why we love being involved with the First-Year Experience program and other various classes and programs across campus.” Gonzalez said.

The Extravaganza is the first opportunity for both the department and the student body at large to meet and greet each other. The department is dedicated to helping students expand their views of what a career is, and where they might end up.

“We want our students to explore all their options in industries that pique their interest, or maybe have not considered yet. This event is a perfect opportunity to ask questions, network, learn more about the company’s values, and what they look for when hiring for the various positions they want to fill.” Gonzalez said.

There’s bonus incentive as well, Gonzalez notes, for anyone who happens to walk by next Wednesday.

“We’ll be giving out some fun swag items along with popcorn, cookies, and lemonade. We’ll also have a selfie booth and a chance for students to enter a giveaway for some fun door prizes we’ve put together. To enter, they just need to tag us with #BearkatsGetHired.”

The crew at Career Services is just getting started with the Extravaganza, almost every month they plan events and in October they kick off a series of Job fairs.

“We also have our Career & Internship fair on Oct. 5 and our Fall Teacher Career Fair on Oct. 26, both which are big hiring opportunities for our students. Our resources can help students get ready, whether they’re seeking an internship, part-time/full-time opportunity, or are new to developing job seeking skills.” Gonzalez said.
