Bridget Jones’s Baby: Movie Review

Bridget Jones is back! 15 years ago the trilogy started, the newest addition “Bridget Jones Baby” has hit theatres. The poor public speaker, clumsy, rash, but very loveable character of Bridget Jones has graced the big screen again.

In both “Bridget Jones Diary” and “Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason” the story line revolved around a love triangle of Jones, Mark Darcy and Daniel —. At the end of  “Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason”, Jones and Darcy seemed to be perfectly happy. In fact, the last scene of the movie was the two of them getting engaged. Many fans, including myself, have an interest in this new film to see why these two are not together.

“Bridget Jones Baby” is set 10 years after the events of the last film. 43 year-old Jones is still single and after an interesting week of events finds herself pregnant.  The only problem is she does not know who the father is.

Jones had just met Jack, a handsome American billionaire and then later in the week connected with old flame Darcy. Now with the two encounters so close together she can’t tell who the father might be. In true Bridget Jones fashion, the audience is taken on a roller-coaster ride of emotions as she tries to fix this predicament.

I don’t want to give the ending away, but I will say all the loose strings are tied up.  The fans of the other two films will leave the theatre satisfied. Anybody who fell in love with the perfectly imperfect heroine back in 2001 will be pleased. The tone of the film belongs with the others.

The storyline is so believable because it sounds like something that Jones would do.  Jones may have grown up a little bit over the last 10 years and sort of got her career in check, but the loveable awkward Jones we all love is still there. In the film, Jones is now a big fancy TV- producer. The only catch is that her new boss wants her to change everything. It is fun to watch how Jones manages all of these changes in her life.

Jones is played again by the lovely Renée Zellweger and the charming Colin Firth is back as Darcy. The new man in Jones’ life is Jack played by “Grey’s Anatomy” hunk Patrick Dempsey. Another reason audiences want to see this film is the fact that it is Zellweger’s first film in 6 years. She took a personal break from acting and many are curious to see her comeback.

So far the film has broken United Kingdom box office records with its release this weekend. For the opening weekend the film grossed $11 million across the pond. In the U.S., “Baby” did respectively well placing 3rd in the box office. With the large fan base and many reasons for audiences to go see it, “Bridget Jones Baby” should be a hit!
