SHSU Review, ‘Beacon’, Submission Deadlines

Deadline to submit material to the literary magazine Sam Houston State University publishes every semester “Beacon” is next Wednesday, Oc. 5. Interested students, faculty, staff, or alumni must email their material to shsreview@shsu.edu.

Regardless of your background experiences or career interests, everyone is encouraged to submit work.

The “Beacon” began in 2013 and is now organized by Assistant Professor in the Department of English, Nicolas Lantz’s Practicum in Publishing class.

The magazine’s title came from student suggestions within the classroom.

“We hope that it presents a certain beacon that shines out the light of all the talent at SHSU,” Lantz said.

The experience of submitting material and then having it be printed and distributed is a great learning tool, Lantz said.

“It’s often [students’] first publication and it gives them the taste of what it’s like to be printed in a book,” he said.

The goal that Lantz has for the “Beacon” is to keep the magazine long after many of its first authors have graduated.

The “Beacon” accepts submissions at the beginning of both the fall and spring semesters. According to Lantz, the biggest challenge facing the program is a lack of submitted works.

The literary magazine accepts works of fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, plays, black and white art and photography.

At the end of each semester, completed copies of the Beacon are printed and given freely to any student that wishes to have a copy.
