Over the weekend, the Sam Houston State University football team won their game against the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks, but what many do not know is that SHSU actually defeated SFA twice on Saturday.
The Bearkat Rugby team ousted the Lumberjacks by a final score of 46-10, to win the Fleet-Mahon Cup.
Senior Jeremy Seligsohn lead the Bearkats in points with ten on two tries. Six other players tallied five points each. Junior prop Ryan Wagner scored four points, followed by senior fly-half Kody Green with two of his own.
8-man freshman Nicholas Olney was named Man of the Match for his outstanding performance.
“Nicholas was all over the pitch Saturday,” senior captain Sal Arismendez said. “He’s a high motor guy, was almost at every breakdown, and he made great defensive plays all day. This was his first official match with Sam Houston. His work rate is fantastic, a natural leader.”
All great players and teams are the product of practice, and that isn’t any different for junior outside center Tyler Luttrel.
“He has definitely exceeded expectations,” Arismendez said. “His athleticism is his greatest asset and his ability to pick up the game in a month has given him a starting spot on the team.”
As the Bearkats start 1-0 on the year, they know that in the Lone Star Conference nothing is given, and every win must be fought for until the final whistle.
One team in particular is on the radar of the Bearkats, the Angelo State University Rams. The Rams are defending conference champions and also posted a victory over the weekend, beating Texas State by a final score of 102-10.
The Rugby team will begin conference play on Oct. 8 against Texas A&M-San Antonio, who is in their first year of competition. The game will be held at Pritchett Field and is set to begin at 2 p.m.
