There comes a time in everyone’s sleep deprived college life when a helping hand is needed. Sam Houston State University offers an opportunity for grabbing a free gift for that special someone, or maybe even make a new best friend, literally.
The Program Council at SHSU sponsors Build-a-Bae to fill that need. For the event, students can come choose out of a variety of stuff animals.
Mekayla Perkins, President of the Program Council, has worked with the organization for more than two years.
“Last year for Build-A-Bae was actually our first time trying it out with the students. We had it downstairs in the Kat Klub, the line was wrapping around it. It was a really, really good turn out,” she said.
While the event isn’t officially sponsored or affiliated with the Build-A-Bear company, the Program Council works with a supplier to find the best animals and stuffing available.
“We go through a vendor for the supplies, they find different stuffed animals, 10 for this year, and then we get the stuffing and set it all up so the students have an easy time making a bear.” Perkins said.
“The student doesn’t need to bring anything. It is first come first serve for the different animals, but besides that all a student needs are to bring themselves!”
Perkins noted that there is high demand for the stuffed animals, and that the limited supply may go fast.
“The event begins at 11am on February 7th, and will run until 12:30, or until we run out,” Perkins said.
To some of our readers who do not know what the Program Council does, it is an organization that commits itself to hosting events for students to relax and have fun.
“The Program Council hosts free events for students throughout the year or semester long, we give away free food or some sort of take away [to] the student, we always try to bring fun for the students”
“For students who live on campus there isn’t always a way to have fun around campus, and we like to provide that.” Perkins said.
Build-A-Bae is free of charge and will be held in the LSC atrium next to the bookstore February 7th, and will begin at 11 am and run until 12:30, or until supplies last.
