Women’s History Month Kicks Off

The U.S. is full of rich history, so much in fact that we have months dedicated to different portions of our history. For March, it is Women’s History Month.

Phi Alpha Theta, the National History Honor Society, hosted a Lecture delivered by SHSU Associate Professor of History and Interim Vice Provost, Dr. Nancy Baker. Dr. Baker is a PhD and has also won awards for her time teaching, has published many articles and chapters regarding the Equal rights amendments, women’s rights and is currently working on two books.

“I’ll be discussing three women who were essential in the fight for women’s rights in 20th-century Texas,” said Dr. Baker. “These women pushed for women to have the right to serve on juries, for married women to be treated as equal to their husbands, and for a state Equal Legal Rights Amendment.”

Dr. Baker is interested in women’s political history and women’s activism.

“I study women’s political history, and I am most interested in women’s activism (on the right and left) to support or oppose change,” Dr. Baker said.

She stresses the importance of learning about those who have made positive impacts on the U.S.

“This is an opportunity to learn more about how individuals who are determined can make change happen,” Dr. Baker said.

If you were unable to make it to Dr. Baker’s lecture there will be a PROFSpeaks event in the Evans Complex on March 8, a film screening about Muslim women on March 9, and three more events coming up after spring break.
