SHSU Student Legal and Mediation Services to host Spring Break Kick-off

Sam Houston State University Student Legal and Mediation Services will host a “Spring Break Kick-off”
for SHSU students on March 7, from 5-6:30 p.m., in the Kat Klub. This is a fun and informative event,
which will include strawberry daiquiri and margarita frozen mocktails (no alcohol), snacks, a cooler
giveaway and sunglasses and cups for everyone in attendance. The cooler includes a Bluetooth speaker,
orange stainless steel tumbler, waterproof phone pouch, snacks and much more. This presentation will
take place in the Kat Klub and there will be free play for the duration of the event. If students bring in
canned good donations, they will be able to put more entries in for the cooler giveaway. Each canned
good is worth an extra entry.

According to Gene Roberts, J.D., SHSU Attorney, Mediator and Director for SHSU Student Legal and
Mediation Services, the goal of the “Spring Break Kick-Off” is for students who travel for Spring Break,
“to be aware of some of the common issues that might happen to them. We’re creating a fun
atmosphere for students where they can learn about their rights and responsibilities.”

According to Roberts, students should attend because, “The old saying is ‘an ounce of prevention is
worth a pound of cure.’ Knowing your rights and responsibly exercising them is crucial.  That knowledge
needs to be provided before students leave for Spring Break. Some people want to take advantage of
college students, for example, stealing identities. We want students to know what to do so that if they
find themselves in one of the situations we will present, they are already prepared.” During and after
the presentation, students are encouraged to ask questions.

SHSU students are invited to attend, not only for a fun atmosphere and giveaways, but also to be
prepared for anything that may happen during their travels during Spring Break. For more information,
students are welcome to contact SHSU Student Legal and Mediation Services at 936-294- 1717, or go to Upcoming-events.
