SHSU Volleyball Wins Fifth Straight

The Sam Houston State University Bearkats took the victory against the Houston Baptist University Huskies by a final set score of 3-0.

The first set was a back-and-forth battle. With six kills from freshman outside hitter Breanna Chausse and senior Taylor Cunningham’s seven digs the Bearkats were able to take the set 25-20.

Sophomore outside hitter Caroline Sheaff reflected on her teammates’ performace that helped take the relief off of Cunningham in the match.

“Its huge because she’s been carrying us for a long time this season,” Sheaff said. “We really try to find more players on the outside and right side to pick up her slack if she was struggling and so now we are finally finding those players”

With help from Sheaff and her seven kills throughout this set the Bearkats were able to pull away 16-11. After scoring another two straight points the Huskies called a time out. With the Kats leading 24-16, sophomore outside hitter Ashely Lewis gave the Bearkats a 25-16 set win.

The Huskies jumped out to a 16-14 lead in the third set, but Lewis gave the Bearkats an 18-14 lead with her serving ace. With the set eventually tied at 24, Chausse delivered a kill which gave the Bearkats the advantage point. On the next serve, an attack error by the Huskies gave the Bearkats the final point they needed to complete the sweep..

“Beating HBU 3-0, I’ll take it any day of the week,” Grey said. “I think we started out of the gates very quickly, and I think they caught up with us and we know how they play. That was huge.”

With this sweep, the Bearkats move to 15-5 on the year and 7-1 in conference play.
