Kat Kab Cruises Campus

The Sam Houston State University Office of Health Promotion will cruise through campus tomorrow in the Kat Kab.

Based loosely on the idea for the TV show “Cash Cab,” a golf cart decorated to be the Kat Kab will drive around campus from 11 a.m. to about 1 p.m.*

Students who get inside the Kat Kab will have the opportunity to answer health-related questions for chances to earn prizes. The more questions they get right, the more prizes they accumulate.

“It’s a fun way of promoting our office, giving students a ride to class in a fun way, but also testing their health knowledge,” Health Promotion Specialist Shannon Kavish said. “We’re getting them to think about things that should kind of be common knowledge, but aren’t always.”

Prizes can include keychains, smart wallets, notepads and more. Participants who get more than 15 questions right will receive a gift card to the campus bookstore.

The Office of Health Promotion is responsible for other health-related events on campus, including the flu shot clinic and the Get Yourself Tested event which was earlier this month. The Kat Kab is just one way to spread health awareness. The office is also responsible for health presentations around campus.

“We also have a health education specialist who does program requests on different health topics,” Kavish said. “Student organizations, professors and residence halls can fill out a form to request a specific health topic presentation and she’ll go to educate them. We do stress management, safer sex, alcohol and drugs, a lot of your big health topics that are pertinent to this population.”

The Kat Kab is one of the more lighthearted events put on by the office. Kavish explained the importance of the Kat Kab in particular.

“The main goal of the Kat Kab is to promote our office and what it does, while having the students think about some important health facts,” Kavish said. “The idea is that they either already know things, or if they didn’t know the answer, then they learn it and hopefully take some of that knowledge with them.”
